Pastor's note:  This was the third email I received from this person.  I responded to the first, but did not plan on responding to the second, simply because it is useless to debate people like this.  However after receiving the third E-mail I figured he deserved a real answer.

From an atheist ...

Dear fundamentalist i noticed you could not answer nor dispute any of my questions for the fact that you cannot argu your petty, deluded religion. That's understandable. I'm not here to sway you out of your beliefs I just hope one day you realize for yourself how ridiculous your beliefs are,and those like you. For the sake of the progress of science and for the sake of mankind as a species. If you ask a free minded thinker theyll tell you, religion is an infectious disease, it's more like a support program for the mentally unstable then anything else. This isn't an attack on you, more of an attack of your beliefs.

Our Answer ...

Dear Atheist:

I trust you have the integrity that, having once attacked my beliefs, you will read to the end.

First I am not a Fundamentalist.  That is the term the liberal media uses for anyone they want to label as a "Bible thumping fanatic," or perhaps more accurately, anyone that tends to disagree with them morally.  It is interesting that the first use of the term "Christian" was a derogatory term used by the pagans trying to belittle the followers of Jesus.  It meant "Little Christ." Things really haven't changed all that much.  The early Christians embraced the concept and were proud to be called, "Little Christ," for that is exactly what they were, and wanted to be, imitators of Jesus Christ, God incarnate in man.

Contrary to your accusation that I can not "argue my petty deluded religion," the fact of the matter is that I really am too busy doing things to debate truth with someone who is not open to truth.  I am quite happy with my beliefs, I understand them completely and I understand why I believe them.  Any one can argue doctrine or philosophy.  For that matter one is as good as another, unless there is something substantial to back it up.

The fact of the matter is I have something you do not have.....

I have empirical evidence that God exists; that He is a perfectly balanced being of absolute righteousness and absolute love.  Something you cannot comprehend.  The Bible says that "Through faith we understand ..."  You say, "unless I can understand I can't have faith."  That is the precise reason you will have a hard time ever accepting the reality of the Divine.  And the precise reason God hid himself from the supposed intellect of man.  God simply said, "My thoughts are higher then your thoughts."  For finite man to even possibly think he could understand the infinite is ridiculous; unless God chooses to reveal Himself.  God has simply placed a requirement that man seek him through faith, rather than with his fallen, self-absorbed, intellect.  As far as intellectual arguments go, Paul the Apostle has one of the best, most accurate assessments of how depraved man approaches God.  See the scripture at the end of this E-Mail letter if you dare.

You could never persuade me that God doesn't exist, because I have personally encountered him in such a personal way that it removes all doubt.  You see, YOU have a philosophy and I have an experience.  I have seen immediate answer to prayer.  I've seen people healed miraculously and I've experienced it myself.  I regularly experience the "gifts of the spirit" outlined in I Corinthians 12 and have many, many people confirm the reality and validity of those gifts in their personal lives.  I have seen miracles with my own eyes.  The reality of God in my experience far outweighs some supposed humanistic argument. The fact is, what I believe changes people for the better. Not something I think Atheism can claim. I'll take the power and reality of my experience over yours or anyone's else's philosophy, doctrine or lack thereof, any day.

You don't believe in God because YOU are deluded: as the Bible says that satan has "blinded the minds of them that believe not, lest they believe the glorious gospel of the lord Jesus Christ."  If you are not afraid of what you might find, try reading Romans Chapter 1:16-32 (I've included it below on the outside chance you don't have a Bible).  Have you ever actually read the Bible, or even tried to talk intelligently to someone who does believe to see why they believe?  Or, are most of your efforts just attacks without any desire to understand?  You might consider this.

The other issue I would bring up is if you are so confident that you have the truth why do you hide your identity,  I am not ashamed of what I believe and teach.  I want people to know what I believe.

Another response to you letter.  You are correct! There is a infectious disease that is the scourge of mankind.  It isn't Christianity, though, and it isn't even atheism or science.  It is SIN.  Sin is passed from person to person through birth as the Bible tells us.  You think not?  Ask yourself why you have to teach a  child to be good.  If men were morally neutral at birth then we wouldn't have to work so hard at training them to be good.  And we wouldn't have the mess we have in the world today. At least be intellectually honest.  The Bible has this one right.

So Atheist, here is the bottom line.

First, your attacks on my belief system mean nothing and accomplish nothing, so your gloating over my lack of response is a bit misplaced.  It actually means I find the time spent debating you as a real waste.  (I only respond here because I believe you have the right to know that my faith does not stand on a religious philosophy but on an unshakable experience with the Living God.)

Second, try standing up for what you believe by attaching your name to it.   Someone who has an opinion worth anything should not be ashamed of it.  It brings more credibility to what you have to say.

Third, I want you to know that I do care about your soul and should you ever want to seriously talk about WHY I believe what I believe I would love to spend time with you.  I am just not interested in debating.

Fourth: I've always wondered why people hated Christianity so much?  What is wrong with living a decent Christian life? The Bible teaches, love, patience, self control, discipline, treating others right, honesty, paying taxes, family values such as fidelity, training children to live decent lives, etc.  These things were taught many of the great philosophers of the past.  Can you really look at our society today and claim that secular humanism has done a good job of training our children? Teen suicide is at an all time high. Why?  We've told them they have no future, nothing outside of this materialistic world to live for.  Our country is in a mess and the scariest thing is that in 20 years, these same teens are going to be running the country.

The ten commandments aren't all that bad are they?  After all, do want someone lying to you, or killing you or stealing from you or making love to your wife? Do you want your children to be rebellious, disrespectful and a blight on society?  I didn't think so. Christianity holds those values out to the world and civilization operates on those very principles.  Otherwise you have societies like atheistic communism. Communism is secular man's attempt to create a decent society without moral guidance from God.  It is a dismal failure because man is basically corrupt and the leaders exploit the power. Please ....  if that is what Atheism does for the world I don't want it.  While I readily admit that not everyone that claims to be a Christian acts like it, that does not take away from the life-changing power of the message has positively impacted billions of people around the world for over 2000 years.  What does atheism do for people?  Not a lot, except make people self-centered.

Fourth, I want to ask you one serious question and make one serious statement.

Q.  What you believe is good enough to live by, but is it good enough to die by?  Meaning, if I am right, you've just really screwed yourself over for eternity.  If you are right, I have still lived a decent life and have nothing to really be sorry for.

S.  Don't trade the eternal for the temporary.

So Atheist, I would ask you to open your heart and simply ask, "God if you are out there, reveal Yourself to me."

Not Ashamed of the Gospel,

Dr. Steve L. Highlander

Rom 1:16-32 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
